Our Resort - About Blue Moon
We invite you to unwind, relax, reconnect and rejuvenate at our small cottage resort.
Welcome… We invite you to unwind, relax, reconnect and rejuvenate at our small cottage resort on peaceful Purdy Lake which is located between Bancroft and Barry’s Bay on the quieter, southeast side of Ontario’s Algonquin Park.
Our all-inclusive, ‘cut-above’, resort has 1,500 feet of frontage on a largely undeveloped lake. A pair of loons nest on the island in the centre and their mournful cries are music for the soul.
With just 6 housekeeping cottages on 20 acres you will be sharing this slice of the sparsely populated Canadian Algonquin Highlands with only a few other guests and the local wildlife. Many of our guests come for weekend or mid-week getaways during the even quieter fall, winter and spring seasons.
Cleanliness is a key priority – Each cottage is thoroughly cleaned after each rental. For example, our cleaners spend 8 or more hours cleaning each of our largest cottages after each rental. The feedback from one guest “I was blown away by how spotless this place was.”
We just returned from 2 relaxing, restoring weeks in the Maples Cottage at the Blue Moon Retreat, our most favourite winter cottage getaway. We have been returning annually for at least 7 years, and have stayed also at the High Noon and the Shangri-La Cottages (we’ve stayed in Spring and Fall too!), but the Maples is our favourite for a winter stay…
Your hardest choice … Hot tubs, saunas, whirlpool tubs, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, water trampolines, tennis, badminton, air hockey, karaoke, and so much more, all at no extra cost; your hardest choice may be to decide what to do next.
All inclusive… While you are staying with us, the only additional charges are for any long distance phone calls you may make (and we recommend that you avoid these by using a calling card or your mobile) and for excessive internet usage (please refer to availability page for information).
At the resort… For those that want to be active, you can enjoy tennis, fishing (lake trout, pike and rock bass), swimming (3 swimming rafts and our now famous water park), canoeing, kayaking, horseshoes, badminton, beach-volley ball and tennis- plus much much more.
All cottages enjoy their own private hot tubs and saunas. We believe that everyone will enjoy the beautiful sunsets over Purdy Lake, star gazing (truly amazing without all the light pollution and you may even be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights), bird watching (our favourites are the blue jays and the loons) and singing songs around your own campfire.
ATVers and snowmobilers will appreciate the ready access to extensive trail systems – for snowmobilers there are 20,000 km of groomed Ontario snowmobile trails.

More about Blue Moon Retreat & the surrounding area
Blue Moon Retreat is located in the midst of the lakes and forests (magnificent fall colors) of the Hastings Highlands of central Ontario, Canada. The local area is a haven for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of more populated areas as our local municipality only has a population density of about 4 for each of its almost 1,300 square kilometers. Of course, a major attraction of this area is nature and a prime destination is world famous Algonquin Park which is less than 50 miles away. While somewhat remote, we have good highway access from major population centers; e.g. Ottawa (a little over 2 hours to the east) and Toronto (about 3 hours to the southwest) and in fact many of our guests come from these centers or even further for weekend or mid-week breaks when these are available (outside of the summer high season).
Good year round access
Our country getaway is on the south shore of largely undeveloped Purdy Lake in the hamlet of Purdy (don’t blink or you will miss it) which is between the towns of Barrys Bay (25 km to the east) and Bancroft (about 46 km to the south west). While somewhat remote, we enjoy good year round access as the driveways come directly off of County Road (formerly highway) 62. The contract for snowplowing the driveways on the property is with a local contractor who lives within a mile of the property and provides excellent and prompt service.
Services are not too far away
The closest services (country general store, gas station, restaurant..) are in Combermere, 7 km to the east on County Road 62 which then continues on to the larger center of Barrys Bay (about another 18 km) which has most services which you would need (e.g. supermarkets, restaurants, drug store, hospital…). If you go west from Blue Moon Retreat on County Road 62, the first small town you enter (in about 22 km) is Maynooth which has some more services than Combermere; but, Bancroft (another 24 km further on) has even more services than in Barrys Bay. As one who has driven a lot in cities, I just love the thought that the nearest stop light is almost 50 km away in Bancroft.
Visitors from out of province
For those coming from further away and have more time to tour, we highly recommend making the triangular tour of Toronto (side trip to Niagara Falls), Ottawa and Montreal (side trip to Quebec City ) stopping at Blue Moon Retreat for a country break while on the Toronto – Ottawa leg of the tour. A variation on this for our American visitors would be to join at the east end of Lake Ontario (near the Thousand Islands ) and returning to the U.S. at Niagara Falls at the west end of Lake Ontario.
